SFO Breaks Records: Thanksgiving Travel Exceeds Pre-Pandemic Levels (2025)

Hold onto your hats, travel enthusiasts! San Francisco International Airport (SFO) just broke a major record during the Thanksgiving period, welcoming nearly 2 million travelers. This surge signals a remarkable rebound, exceeding even the bustling pre-pandemic levels of 2019!

After a month of travel chaos, including government shutdowns and unpredictable weather, it seems nothing can deter people from flying in and out of San Francisco.

From November 20th to December 1st, over 1.8 million passengers either arrived at or departed from SFO. This figure narrowly edged out the previous record of 1.78 million set during Thanksgiving 2019.

But here's where it gets interesting: SFO's definition of the holiday season is quite generous, considering many people take a whole week off. The busiest days? Typically the Friday before Thanksgiving week and the Sunday after.

For travelers, this meant a few extra inconveniences: longer security lines, packed waiting areas, and a scramble for charging outlets.

However, what does this mean for San Francisco? Mayor Daniel Lurie sees this as a sign of a thriving tourism industry and a strong economic recovery. "Tourism is our biggest industry, supporting our small businesses and generating the revenue that funds essential services for San Franciscans," he stated.

Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet echoed these sentiments, highlighting the winter travel season as a key indicator of "travel demand and operational execution." He praised airport staff for expertly managing the crowds and flight schedules.

What do you think? Does this surge in travel reflect a genuine recovery, or are there other factors at play? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
