Hollywood's Diversity Crisis: A Step Back in Representation
A staggering revelation: Over 90% of streaming shows are created by white individuals, according to a UCLA study, revealing a significant decline in diversity within the entertainment industry. But what does this mean for the future of inclusive storytelling?
The study, released by the University of California, Los Angeles, paints a concerning picture. In 2024, the top 250 most-viewed scripted series showcased a lack of diversity, with white creators dominating the scene. The numbers are striking: 91.7% of these shows were created by white people, with white men making up a whopping 79% of show creators. This trend extends to performers, with white actors securing 80% of all roles.
Here's where it gets controversial: Despite minority and female audiences driving viewership for these series, opportunities for people of color and women in front of the camera have diminished. The report highlights that only 49 out of 222 scripted series surveyed were created by women, and creators of color accounted for a mere 8%.
The progress made following the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests seems to be unraveling. Back then, streaming giants and traditional networks alike vowed to enhance diversity, investing in projects featuring and led by people of color, especially Black individuals. However, the re-election of Donald Trump and his administration's opposition to DEI programs have seemingly reversed these efforts. Major players like Disney, Amazon, Paramount, and Warner Bros. have discontinued their long-standing diversity initiatives.
"The election results in 2024 have led to an expected yet disheartening outcome," said Darnell Hunt, UCLA executive vice-chancellor and provost. He further emphasized the importance of diversity, stating, "Shutting out diverse voices limits the potential for collaboration, exploration, and growth."
But there's a twist in this narrative. Even as diversity behind the camera declines, the study found that shows with underrepresented storylines, regardless of the lead actor's gender, gained traction in 2024. Take Apple's Ted Lasso and HBO's The Penguin, for instance, which featured compelling female characters in secondary roles.
"Diverse stories continue to resonate with audiences," remarked co-author Nico Garcia. "When the narrative is engaging, viewers tune in, regardless of the lead's identity."
And this is the part most people miss: Shows with underrepresented storylines, especially those centered around women, generated significant social media engagement. HBO's House of the Dragon and Netflix's Bridgerton are prime examples of this phenomenon.
"Shows with underrepresented narratives, such as women-led stories, receive five times more social media interactions than those without," co-author Michael Tran observed.
However, the future of diversity in Hollywood remains uncertain. The recent bidding war between Netflix, Paramount, and others for Warner Bros. has raised concerns. Industry experts argue that a merger between major companies, particularly Netflix and Warner Bros., could stifle creative competition. The Writers Guild of America has voiced strong opposition, claiming that such a merger would lead to job losses, lower wages, and worse conditions for entertainment workers.
